I’ve been tinkering around the idea of creating a Wordpress theme from scratch, start to finish. I’ve written parts of it but it’s a tremendous task.

You do text replacement differently than I, and I have a different suggestion. Instead of adding extra mark-up in the HTML, simply add "text-indent: -9999em" to the h1 tag.
